Fast Times at Oak Tree 5K

Racers were greeted with ideal conditions on the morning of the last day of August. A number of runners had converged on Geneseo High School for the Oak Tree Half Marathon and 5K. Like last year, the 5K was serving as the USATF Niagara 5K championship.

We only had open teams competing this year, with a few masters runners racing on open or for the sheer joy of competition. Luckily, both open teams fared very well, with the open men earning second place, and the open women, to absolutely nobody’s surprise, finishing first.

One of the great things about this race is the massive amounts of data that race director Ben tracks. For instance, he records age group records for both races, and thanks to his data, we know that RKR members set the following age group records:

Katie Cobos (F20-24) – 18:10
Trisha Byler (F40-44) – 17:15
Tim Dwyer (M65-69) – 19:34

Through this race, the open men are comfortably in second place. Open women have a commanding lead, and both masters teams are in third. Next up is the Ridge Run 25K Trail Championship on October 19th.
