2nd Annual Wa Wa Wally Waddle 5K and Kids Runs

Kids 1 mile run 2010

Would you like to spend a spring morning at an ecological preserve, run a 5K on a scenic
dirt road, listen to some music, and maybe win a fresh-baked pie? The second annual Wally
Waddle boasts these defining features. After a successful inaugural year, we’ve added more pies
and entertainment. We’ve also enhanced the race in a few ways: The race course has been altered
to avoid some winter-born potholes, and there is a new 100 meter dash to get some younger
runners-to-be started on a path of lifelong fitness.

The money raised by the Waddle goes toward providing scholarships for local children
to attend Camp Wa Wa Segowea in the Berkshires. Segowea is located just an hour away from
Poughkeepsie and should be credited with having a long-term positive impact on the lives of
hundreds of Dutchess County residents since it opened in 1928. The Segowea experience gently
encourages kids to try new things that take them out of their comfort zone. Many first-time
Segowea campers never swam in a lake, sang taps, ate wild blueberries, hiked several miles,
danced the Time Warp, or transformed from stranger to friend in just a few days. Segowea
creates a safe space for its campers to experience remarkable growth, learning about both self
and others.

All of the Perks children attended Camp Segowea, together I would guess we have spent
close to 50 summers playing in those woods. Not only did all the Perks kids attend camp as
campers, we all spent at least a few summers working on the staff. Even my wife Lisa was once
a Camp Segowea camper, and later the camp nurse. For several years, as economic hardships
forced the close of the Dutchess County YMCA and Camp Segowea, it looked as if I would
never have a chance to send my own kids to Segowea. Because of fundraisers like the Wally
Waddle, and the wonderful support of our community, it won’t be long before another generation
of Perks kids, and kids from all over the Hudson Valley, are packing their trunks and heading off
to the Berkshires to make their own lasting memories.

Please come out to Vassar Farm on Sunday May 15th to support the Waddle and Camp
Segowea. You can run on a scenic course, compete for pies, and know you’re helping give a
local child the life-changing opportunity to attend summer camp.
